Oswald Chambers in the Academy Library

During March we focus on the life and works of Oswald Chambers, and every day start the morning with a quote from this famous Scottish pastor, teacher and chaplain during World War I to British troops stationed in Egypt. He died tragically at a young age while in Egypt, but his wife, Biddy, took notes of his sermons and published many of his teachings after his death. Her most famous compilation was the daily devotional My Utmost For His Highest. The library has this devotional, a biography of his life by D.W. Lambert, as well as his complete works in one volume with an accompanying CD. Here are a few quotes from Oswald Chambers that have inspired and comforted this month:

"Where is the love of God in war? In suffering? In all the inevitable inequalities of life? No one who faces facts as they are could ever prove that God is love unless he accepts the revelation of his love made by Jesus Christ." The Place of Help

"We do not worship an austere, remote God. He is here in the thick of it." Biblical Ethics

Lent and Easter Resources in the Academy Library

Lent is the forty-day period before Easter when Christians reflect on Christ's sacrifice on the cross. It begins on Ash Wednesday and ends Holy Thursday for Roman Catholics, or the day before Easter in other churches. Sundays are skipped during Lent because they are always days of rejoicing to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
The library is decorated with a Lenten Tree containing items symbolizing Holy Week. Stop by and see the many books, videos and DVDs on this subject on display around the library.

February Highlights in the Academy Library

February is full of things to highlight and celebrate in the academy library. Stop by to see some of the items on display for Black History Month, Saint Valentine's Day, Chinese New Year, Presidents' Day (George Washington and Abraham Lincoln), Groundhog or Candlemas Day, and the beginning of Lent or the 40 days of reflection, soul-searching and repentance before Easter. There will be a Lenten Tree displayed in the library with symbols added each week relating to Christ's suffering, death and resurrection. All this month the Englishman John Donne, a major representative of the 17th century metaphysical poets will be featured. Donne was also a celebrated minister and famous for his Holy Sonnets. His quotes will be displayed throughout the school and on the library door.

A New Year, a New Semester and George MacDonald

Throughout January there will be quotes by Victorian author and Scottish minister, George MacDonald, read each morning as well as posted on the library door. Twentieth century British author C.S. Lewis admired MacDonald and had this to say about him: "I dare not say that he is never in error; but to speak plainly I know hardly any other writer who seems to be closer, or more continually close, to the Spirit of Christ Himself. I have never concealed the fact that I regarded him as my master; indeed I fancy I have never written a book in which I did not quote from him."
