The Jesse Tree and Advent

The library is decorated for Advent and Christmas. Stop by and see all the great resources we have for this special time of year. Next week there will be a Jesse Tree in the library. The idea for a Jesse Tree comes from the passage in the Old Testament book of Isaiah that says: "A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a branch will bear fruit." Jesse was the father of King David, and Jesus Christ is a descendant of King David. The Church Year

Many Christians follow The Church Year or Calendar and, according to several church websites, this custom or tradition was designed to help people know God and remember what He has done. The Church Year follows Jesus' life, death, resurrection, ascension, and the sending of His Holy Spirit at Pentecost. Beginning with Advent, it moves in order through Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Easter and Pentecost with Scripture readings and special colors for each season.
Advent, which this year begins on November 29th, is celebrated on the four Sundays preceding Christmas. The word means coming or presence. The theme of Advent is waiting, but it remembers more than the many centuries when the world awaited a Savior. It also calls us to patiently wait for God's work in our own lives, and the return of Jesus at the end of earthly time. Though some churches use the color purple for Advent, others use blue, the same as the sky, because it reminds people of the endless hope all believers have in Jesus Christ. Although we don't know the exact date of Christ's birth, the Christmas Season begins on December 25th, and ends on January 6th with Epiphany Day. That's why people speak of the Twelve Days of Christmas. Christmas has a short season of two Sundays associated with it, running right up to the season of Epiphany. The colors of Christmas are white and gold because it is a festival of our sinless Savior.
The word epiphany comes from a Greek word meaning to shine upon. Epiphany begins with January 6th, the day we commemorate the arrival of the wise men, who followed a star to the baby Jesus in Bethlehem, and brought him gifts. Because of this, historically, many Christians give one another presents on this day rather than on Christmas Day.

Author Randy Singer is a former teacher at Houghton Academy. He is now a prolific and popular Christian novelist, and someone recently compared his legal thrillers to those of John Grisham. Music of the Christian Church

The woman who wrote the beloved song for children, Jesus Loves Me, also wrote this beautiful prayer. Her name was Anna Warner and she was an American hymn writer who died in 1915.

Houghton's History

All this week a team from Middle States Association and The Association of Christian Schools will be visiting the academy to evaluate our program and give suggestions for improvement. The school they will be judging has a rich history. The Academy was started in 1883 and the founders wanted to provide an affordable, quality Christian education to local children. The school now serves young people from many different countries as well as local youth, but has not otherwise changed its purpose.

The library has some good resources if you would like to know more about the early history of America. Columbus Day weekend I was privileged to tour Jamestown Settlement and the Yorktown Battlefield in Virginia. The experience reminded me of something a 19th century Scottish minister wrote:

More about Prayer

This past Sunday Pastor Wes Oden, in his sermon at Houghton Wesleyan Church, said the most important truth about prayer is believing God loves us and delights in doing us good.


Elisabeth Elliot would agree with this view. She is the author of The Savage My Kinsman, the story of her brave effort to reach the Huaorani (Auca) people in Ecuador after they brutally murdered her young husband and four of his fellow-missionaries. She wrote many other books as well and has some wonderful insights into prayer. In one of her books she writes:

"Are you as often tempted as I am
to doubt the effectiveness of prayer?

On this day in 1536 William Tyndale died. Tyndale was a scholar and linguist who translated a large portion of the Bible into English. He wanted the common people in England to be able to read the Scriptures in their own language. The library has some resources about William Tyndale. Here are a few titles:

Welcome to Houghton Academy Library News!

Here is what is new in the library, October 2009:

• The academy library now has a computer dedicated to our online public access catalog or OPAC. This replaces the old paper card catalog. You may now search for items you want by title, author, subject, keyword and even by donor using an Easy Word Search! Just follow the directions on the computer by the CD collection in the last aisle of the library.
• There are paper-copy lists of all the videos, DVDs, audiotapes, and CDs in the library collection. These are located in the library and also in the staff lounge. If you would like an electronic copy of these lists just send an e-mail to the librarian, Mrs. Stockin, at: donnie.stockin@houghtonacademy.org
• The electronic versions of these lists may be searched by hitting the keys Ctrl and then F for (find). Type in any title, author, phrase or word, and find what you are looking for.
• The emphasis in the library during the month of October is on prayer. Material about this subject is on display, as well as items about fall sports, Columbus and Thanksgiving.
